I am doing some volunteer IT work for a small non-profit organization, and have got them some equipment donated from the Electronics Recycling Association. One of the items is a Cisco Catalyst 2950 switch.
I would like to set up Cisco Network Assistant on a PC and play with it, but on the download page, it says it requires a customer login, which requires a contract number or bill-to ID (I have neither of these). Any ideas on how I can get set up with a customer login (preferable), or at least somewhere I can get the software? I'm reasonably sure CNA (and CCP) are free to anyone. That said, the CNA may not work on an old 2950.

Well, that's embarrassing. From what I read on the site, I understood you needed a contract number or bill-to ID to register. Honestly, I don't really need the software - it is more of a learning opportunity, as I haven't worked with Cisco switches before. I haven't done much CLI (mostly Dell switches under the guidance of tech support), mostly just done the management through web interfaces.
As I got this switch used, I am not sure how it is configured. I haven't had a chance to try the Express Setup yet to see if it has been run, so I don't know if it is even configured with an IP address.
The config will be fairly simple. Right now I am just using it as a straight switch on my test bench to set up PCs. The only things I can think of that I might use off-hand (other than port stats, as their wiring is terrible) are possibly trunking / LACP for the server, and maybe VLANs (they have some public PCs that I have considered putting on a separate segment). None of it will make much difference to them at this point - it's more for my experience. CNA lists the 2950 as supported on the latest version (6.2.0) - checked that earlier. Although it doesn't support Windows 10, which is a bit of a pain (same with Spiceworks, although my understanding is that it will work with an alternate port). Will see how I make out between the web interface and CNA (and Spiceworks, of course!). Don't bother with a firmware upgrade.
In the Cisco world we only update firmware if we hit a bug or a security issue. Never do it 'just 'cos.' If you want to learn Cisco then you MUST learn the CLI. There is no better way to configure or support Cisco gear, with the exception of the ASA's and Wireless LAN Controllers which have excellent GUI's.
You will find the CNA (and CCP) config add a lot of stuff that may not be needed and can confuse the bejesus out of un-initiated. If administering Cisco is the goal, CLI is the gateway to all that being a Cisco guy offers. Well, I managed to get it to run the Express Setup mode, it gives 10.0.0.2 to the connected PC via DHCP, I can ping the switch on 10.0.0.1, but I don't get the web page.
I have done all the standard troubleshooting steps for the Express Setup, but no luck. If I telnet to 10.0.0.1, I get a '#Switch' prompt (I haven't attempted to clear any existing config). I don't have a console cable (yeah, I know, everyone has dozens lying around:>). I have also installed CNA, just to see what it looks like, but haven't done anything with it.

If you change the IP address you will simply cut yourself off from the switch until you power cycle it OR put your PC in the same address range as the switch so you can re-establish telnet connectivity.
Yes, as per my last post, when the switch is in Express Setup mode, it will give the connected system an IP via DHCP. I did the config as stated above, and verified that the switch is at the correct address (and that the config survives a reboot), but now I have a different issue - when I telnet to the switch, I get 'Password required, but none set', and then it disconnects the Telnet session. Also, I still cannot get a web interface to come up on the switch's IP. Is the web interface dependent on a hardware or IOS version? Or a config setting? Based on what I had read on the Express Setup, it should have been there by default. No IOS update recommended?
I thought pretty much every new version had security fixes in it. Sorry, I did have the version info, but didn't grab it before I lost access to the switch.
